Wilderland has two websites, one always-on, higher resolution website that is heavier to run, and one experimental, situated site, that is solar powered, and in the Nephin Park
The solar site might not always be on or available, it also has other quirks, and will be slower. Adjust your expectactions for this Permacomputing + Small Web alternative.
The walk will be led by Michael Chambers, Head Guide at Wild Nephin National Park and will take place along the hedgerow trail at Ballycroy visitor centre. Michael will introduce us to native plant and tree species along the trail, and we'll hear all about hedgerows and their importance in helping protect our biodiversity,.
We’ll find out about native Irish species of shrubs, trees and wildflowers, the importance of hedgerows as habitat for woodland plants and animals. and learn about how hedgerows act as wildlife corridors in our towns and countryside, providing food, shelter and nest sites for pollinators, birds, bats and other animals.
We'll also hear about different types of hedgerows and the work being carried out to help with hedgerow conservation and restoration, how they can protect our water quality, and help decarbonisation through the role they can play in carbon storage and sequestration.
We will also be gathering plants for artist Clare Breen and Kasia Kaminska's year-long collaborative plant collection project Flower Féilire, to produce a large-scale cyanotype artwork and calendar of Mayo's indigenous plant life.
All welcome!
FREE entry, no booking required.
This walk is the fourth in a series of plant walks that will take place over the coming year as part of the Flower Féilire project. The walks will follow the The Celtic Calendar and will coincide with the four cross quarter fire festivals - Imbolc, Bealtaine, Lúnasa and Samhain - the Spring and Autumn Equinoxes and the Winter and Summer Solstices. Each walk will focus on the different native plant life and habitats found in Wild Nephin National Park and surrounding areas.
